New to medicare insurance?

Are you nearing 65 years old, been receiving Social Security disability for more than 24 months, or battling End-Stage Renal Disease or ALS? You may qualify for Medicare, federally-provided health care insurance coverage. Medicare is made up of four parts, each addressing certain needs when medical attention is needed.

Part A: Covers medically necessary inpatient related services such as hospital stays, skilled nursing, home healthcare and hospice.  In most cases, there is not a premium for Part A.  Part A is not full coverage.  Deductibles and cost-sharing apply.

Part B: Covers medically necessary outpatient services such as doctor services, preventative care, lab tests, physical therapy, and other services provided in an outpatient setting.  There is a premium for Part B.  Part B is not full coverage.  Deductibles and cost-sharing apply.

Part C: (also known as Medicare Advantage): Private insurance carriers under contract with Medicare offer these plans.  They cover the same services as Parts A and B but may offer extra benefits like routine vision, hearing, dental, and more.  Prescription drug coverage (Part D) is typically bundled into the plan.  A premium may be required.  Deductible and cost shares typically apply and vary by plan.

Part D: Covers prescription drugs.  Plans are sold through private insurance carriers under contract with Medicare.  Part D plans are sold as stand-alone coverage or may be included in a Medicare Advantage plan.  Premiums may apply.  Deductible and Cost shares apply and vary by plan.

There are also Medigap or Supplemental plans that will cover costs not addressed above.

Once on Medicare, there is still a lot to be aware of. Plans change either through legislation, insurance carriers deciding not to operate in certain areas, or other reasons. This also applies to providers who no longer carry your plan, no longer accept Medicare, or maybe just aren’t in operation anymore.

That’s why it is so important to know when the open enrollment periods are during any given year. This will give you the opportunity to review your plans and make necessary changes if needed. If any of the above has happened, request a list of available plans and compile a list of medications you need.

This information will help ease the transition from one insurance carrier or provider to another.
