In 2020, a worldwide pandemic caught the headlines. But that doesn’t mean the flu took the year off and it will continue to be an issue through 2021 and beyond. Under private or employer-backed insurance, flu shots will still be recommended and easily available.
Getting a yearly flu shot is critical for all ages in avoiding serious complications from the seasonal flu. But it’s particularly important for those 65 and older. People over 65 are especially susceptible to serious complications from the flu and it is highly recommended that they receive a yearly flu vaccination.
The CDC estimates that between 70 percent and 85 percent of flu-related deaths occur in people 65 years and older each flu season. It recommends that seniors receive a flu shot instead of a nasal spray. Most years, there are different versions of the flu vaccine specifically for people 65 and older to better accommodate their immune systems.
How Medicare Covers Flu Shots Depends on Coverage Plans
If you’re newly retired, you may be wondering if any Medicare-approved plans cover getting a flu shot. In most cases, Medicare will cover the cost of a flu shot, but there are some stipulations based on the specific coverage you have.
Costs of Flu Shot Based on Medicare Coverage
Medicare Part B covers a flu shot once every flu season, which usually runs from November to April. How Medicare covers the cost of a flu shot depends on the type of plan a patient has:
Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C): Flu shots are fully covered by Medicare Advantage if the patient receives care from an in-network provider.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B): As long as the patient receives a flu shot from a participating provider who accepts Medicare assignment, the cost of the flu shot is covered.
