The Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP) runs from January 1 to February 14 each year. This gives individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan the opportunity to dis-enroll in that plan and return to coverage under original Medicare. This period can also be used to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan and/or a stand-alone Part D drug plan. Here are some important considerations:
- The timing can be tricky, especially when making changes late in the MADP. Make sure you and your agent understand the timing so you can avoid any unnecessary gaps in coverage.
- Your enrollment in a Medicare Supplement plan may be subject to underwriting. In other words, there is no guarantee you will be able to enroll in the plan of your choice. Again, a competent agent can help you understand your options.
- Even if your Medicare Advantage plan did not include Part D drug coverage, you may still enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan during this window. You may be charged a late enrollment penalty if you did not have some form of creditable coverage prior.
